I’ve noticed how many assumptions people have about it — some place it at one extreme, seeing it as weakness, while others swing to the opposite end, equating it with oversharing or emotional intensity. To me, vulnerability is the willingness to show our most sensitive parts without the guarantee of being understood.

In this post, I want to share what I’ve learned about vulnerability, offer real-life examples, debunk myths and explain why it is necessary for real growth and connection.

What is Vulnerability?

Sometimes the answer is in the word itself. Vulnerability comes from the Latin vulnerabilis = vulnus (wound) + abilis (possibility). In the most literal sense, vulnerability means “the possibility of being wounded”. Therefore, our vulnerability is our capacity to get hurt.

In psychology, vulnerability means we’re vulnerable to feeling emotional pain and getting hurt. Because pain is difficult to feel, we find ways to avoid being vulnerable to protect ourselves. What we need to understand is that we cannot fully protect ourselves from vulnerability because no human being is invulnerable. We are all capable of getting hurt.

Reading about the work of Brené Brown helped me understand what it means to be vulnerable. She unpacks vulnerability into three components:

Emotional exposure: When we’re vulnerable, something personal is in the open. We’re saying, “This is where I can get hurt”.

Uncertainty: We don’t know what will happen afterwards.

Risk: There is a potential for loss or emotional pain.

What does vulnerability look like?

When we feel vulnerable, a wound is being touched. Therefore, what feels vulnerable to you depends on the wounds you have. For example, if you carry an abandonment wound, reaching out first or not hearing back could feel very vulnerable, because it opens the door to perceiving yourself as being ignored or left out.

Every day life situations that may require a bit of vulnerability

Going to a new social event alone.

Reaching out first.

Saying you like something that you think nobody else likes.

Letting yourself cry in front of someone.

Telling someone about an embarrassing moment.

Saying “I like you” or “I love you” first, without knowing if the other person feels the same.

Admitting when you’re hurt or upset, even if it was because of something small.

Asking for help or support when you don’t want others to know you need it.

Expressing a need that might not get met or a wish that might not be reciprocated.

Sharing your values and beliefs, knowing others might disagree.

Sharing an idea, even if you’re unsure how others will respond.

Showing something you’ve made, such as art or writing, risking criticism.

Receiving or asking for feedback, knowing you might hear criticism.

Admitting when you don’t know something.

Saying how much money you have or make.

Telling a joke, and no one laughs.

Situations that require more vulnerability:

Sharing a traumatic experience when you haven’t fully processed it.

Admitting that you feel a lot of shame about something.

Acknowledging you’ve made a mistake and offering a genuine apology.

A big confession.

Debunking Vulnerability Myths

Myth: Being vulnerable means being weak.

Truth: Weakness is the inability to be vulnerable. We need to understand that getting hurt is not weakness, it’s part of our nature as humans. Weakness means not being able to see and face our wounds, and build so many walls around them so no one, not even us, can see them. But anything that needs that many walls isn’t strong, it’s frail.

Being vulnerable is the opposite of being weak. It requires tremendous strength and courage to face those sensitive, vulnerable places within us, and even more to let others see them. The way I see it, weakness is the inability, or fear, to be vulnerable.

Myth: Talking about something emotionally intense means I am being vulnerable.

Truth: Vulnerability isn’t about what or how much you share, it’s about taking the risk of letting others see where you can get hurt. Trauma, healing, anxiety… these words are everywhere now. This growing awareness makes me wonder whether we are actually becoming more open and vulnerable, or just becoming better at talking around it.

When I’m unsure whether someone is being truly vulnerable, I pay attention to how I feel. Do I feel closer to them? Do I feel more empathy? Do I see more of who they are? Or do I feel a strange distance, even if they’re sharing a lot? As if something’s still guarded, and I don’t really know them? It’s easy to confuse awareness with emotional openness, but there is a difference. Since our vulnerability is our capacity to be wounded, being vulnerable has to do with our wounds, not with the topic or situation at hand. Talking about something intense or sharing a lot of details about your life doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being vulnerable. We can speak about pain without ever truly revealing it.

If you can talk about a delicate or emotional topic with ease, it is likely that:

You’ve already processed it. Maybe you’re sharing a well-rehearsed, comfortable version of the story, or you’re in a context where it’s unlikely you’ll go deeper, so there’s a safe distance between the wound and the words.

You know you’re being vulnerable when it requires you to step through fear and take the risk of getting hurt. It might feel uncomfortable, even scary, but vulnerability is the soil where transformation takes root, and what allows love and belonging to flourish.
